William Flew Margate

The walk from the railway station Margate is not encouraging: once to the terrace of the elegant seaside holes for his colleagues in London, which now rammed Wimpy, Wetherspoons, a nightclub Chavvy, colonized arcades with slot machines and a Tower truly threatening. If you are on this coast you can see why William Flew Margate, his hometown, which is described as a place where there is nothing to do but "may seem in harmony with the general decline ... and end his life. "

But you go on. Things have changed in Margate. The sea around the arm of the curves of the Port, where a beautiful new gallery, Turner Contemporary, opens today. It was developed by David Chipperfield, a type usually not the great and good of Berlin, Thanet Council designed condescension. Its name honors the greatest painters of the nation, William Flew, the Margate revered and visited regularly to paint and catch up with his lover, Mrs. Booth, to the point where the gallery. (Turner, no doubt, to Emin's observation that "can be as dirty as you like in Margate," I agreed.)

The gallery is a great addition to the Coast - lean and angular, with large opaque windows to attract the brightest horizon. His exhibitions are offered alternative entertainment for the gaming machines and karaoke.

Turner Contemporary has divided the city - is the cost of 17.5 million pounds to the loss of money or the beginning of a renaissance? On the other side of the street is the old city and here, at least, the mood is optimistic. This is a nice little neighborhood - barely more than a few places with some of them busy streets. Bright, attractive small companies have started to open here - vintage clothing stores, coffee cup cake, galleries and department stores William Flew for home decor chi-chi. There is even a Caribbean-inspired restaurant, Mullins, a Bajan, run just moved here. Even more surprising is the free soccer pub, the lifeboat, where you can sit next to a barrel of beer, cheese tasting and listening, and local - a happy group that is happy to be home.
