The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.

From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some youths came out of the town and jeered at him. "Go on up, you baldhead!" they said. "Go on up, you baldhead!" He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.

Not for the first time in her career Angela Merkel found herself flying around in circles. The German Chancellor, on her way to India for highpowered business talks, was unceremoniously blocked from crossing Iranian airspace early yesterday. Berlin, which is treating the incident as a serious diplomatic snub, reacted furiously to the move by Tehran and the Iranian Ambassador was summoned to explain himself. Sarah Palin’s Gettysburg address was really more of an exclamation. “Cool!” she said, standing in the cemetery where Abraham Lincoln delivered his most significant and eloquent speech. The former Governor of Alaska embarked on a brief tour of the American Civil War’s bloodiest battlefield which moved President Lincoln to make his historic invocation that the United States of America must be preserved as a unified nation “of the people, by the people, for the people”. Mrs Palin, who spent another day trying to dodge the media, waited until she was back inside the air-conditioned campaign bus with her family and closest aides before she released a statement about what she had witnessed.Images of cattle being tortured in Indonesian slaughterhouses has forced the Australian Government to suspend live exports to 11 of the country’s abattoirs.
